Reimagining Disability Through Contemporary English Literature: Narrative Representation, Identity Formation, and Inclusive Perspectives

Abstract

Disability representation in contemporary English literature has evolved considerably, reflecting changing perspectives on identity, inclusion, and social justice. This review synthesizes recent scholarship to examine how literary narratives reconstruct disability beyond traditional deficit-oriented portrayals. The analysis explores the theoretical foundations of disability representation, the evolution of literary depictions, narrative strategies that shape disability experiences, identity formation, and the growing emphasis on inclusive perspectives in contemporary literary discourse. The review demonstrates that modern literary works increasingly portray disabled characters as multidimensional individuals whose experiences are shaped by personal agency, community belonging, and intersecting social identities rather than by impairment alone. Contemporary storytelling also promotes empathy, ethical reflection, and human rights by challenging ableist assumptions and encouraging more authentic representations of disability across diverse literary genres. Furthermore, the review highlights the expanding role of inclusive education, digital accessibility, and ethical publishing in strengthening disability visibility within literary and cultural contexts. Despite significant progress, persistent gaps remain in cross-cultural representation, intersectional analyses, and the inclusion of diverse disability experiences across global literary traditions. Future research should adopt interdisciplinary approaches that integrate literary criticism, Disability Studies, education, and digital humanities to advance more comprehensive and inclusive scholarship. Overall, contemporary English literature functions as a transformative medium that reshapes perceptions of disability, supports identity affirmation, and contributes to more equitable and inclusive societies.
